From one of our Central Fred neighbours:
Hello everyone, I have had numerous inquires regarding 'Santa's Runway' which has lit up Merner Ave between Chapel and Brubacher the past two Christmas Eve's. The word has somehow gotten out that we were responsible for starting this in the Central Frederick neighbourhood.
This is a tradition that began for me growing up in North Bay however I can't be certain of the origins. Perhaps there are some of you who have seen this in other communities?
On Christmas Eve, after dinner (around 7 pm) neighbours gather outside and light up the section of boulevard in front of their home with luminaries (a candles in a white paper bag). The effect is magical and both adults and children love it. Adults have the pleasure of greeting their neighbours often sharing a hot beverage as they go for an after dinner walk. The children love the idea that Santa will be able to find their homes better with a well lit 'runway'. It would be wonderful if this tradition spread through our Central Frederick neighbourhood!
To makes things easier, I have purchased the bags and candles in bulk. These can be picked up at 100 Merner Ave on Sunday December 22nd between 1 pm and 4 pm and Tuesday December 24th between 2 pm and 5 pm. Cost is $1.50 per bag and candle (I recommend 4-5 per household). 30% of all funds gathered will be donated to the local Food Bank. If you are not available during those times, consider asking a neighbour to pick up your candles for you.
What an amazing community building event. I can’t wait to see how many lights are lit on Christmas Eve and how much is raised for the Food Bank
